Use High-efficiency detergent
More often than not, homeowners use regular detergent to do laundry. What people may not realize is that if high efficiency detergent is not used scum and residue will build-up leaving an unwanted odor in your washer. It is also very important to focus your attention on the amount of detergent you use depending on the size of the load you are washing.
Inspect the drain hose
If the hose connected to your washer is not installed properly, it will not drain the water properly. If the water is not draining from your washer this will cause the awful odors to remain affecting your clothing not to mention, the water washing your clothing will already be dirty.
Keep the washer open when not in use
After a typical cycle, small amounts of water are left in the washing machine. When you are done with your washer for the day, leave the door open for a couple hours to allow the excess water to dry out.
With excess water being the issue, you should check for mildew growth as it can also leave an awful odor. If you find mildew build-up you will have to have the gasket of your washer repaired or replaced.
